Curriculum and Belt Progression
Our Belt Progression System
Advancement in Taekwondo is symbolised by a series of increasingly darker coloured belts. At Taekwondo World, those belts are: white, yellow, blue, red and black. Each of our coloured belts also have a number of tip levels. Different martial arts school, and even some other Taekwondo Schools, may use different colours. The purpose, however, is the same: to provide students with a system for measuring progress through short term goals on the way to the long term goal of black belt. In order to progress through the belt system, students must memorize, practice and satisfactorily perform a number of requirements, including: kicks, blocks, punches, patterns (a choreographed sequence of movements) and sparring. There are also Korean terms required to be memorised.
White Belts
White Belt students lay the foundation for all future Taekwondo development.
Classes at this level focus on building strength, flexibility, coordination, and learning the fundamental kicks, strikes, and blocks with correct technique.
Children and adults often bring different strengths to their training. Children may adapt quickly to the physical demands, while adults may grasp the theoretical aspects more readily. Regardless of age, advancement is based on curriculum knowledge and each student’s “personal best” performance.
Yellow Belts
Yellow Belt introduces students to one of the key components of Taekwondo as a sport: sparring.
This phase allows students to safely apply the techniques they’ve learned under the careful supervision of our instructors. By Second Tip Yellow Belt, students also begin learning poomsae—choreographed sequences of movements.
From this point on, our curriculum is delivered through rotating “Theme Days,” with classes alternating between Patterns, Basic Technique, and Sparring. Please refer to your branch’s timetable for details.
At this stage, students are expected to develop the habit of giving their full effort during every class. Consistency, energy, and intensity lay the groundwork for future success.
Blue Belts
Blue Belt students begin practicing more advanced techniques, including jumping kicks and combination hand strikes. These skills often require increased repetition and focused practice. Commitment, perseverance, and attention to detail are critical for continued progress.
At this level, students often notice improvements in fitness, mood, and concentration. We also emphasize life skills such as cooperation and self-control. Many classes will include partner drills, encouraging teamwork, communication, and mutual respect.
Red Belts
Red Belt introduces complex techniques that challenge students to refine their abilities. The fundamentals mastered at earlier belt levels become essential tools for learning advanced movements.
At this stage, students are held to a higher standard across all areas of training and are encouraged to focus on mastering the “small details,” which often make the biggest difference. Red Belt students are also guided to set their sights on the goal of Black Belt.
Many students may be invited to join our Leadership Program and are considered “senior students.” Qualities such as humility, sincerity, mentorship, and self-motivation become key areas of growth.
Black Belts
At Taekwondo World, earning a Black Belt is not the end—it is a new beginning. We believe a Black Belt represents a way of life.
Black Belt students are seen as role models by their peers and are expected to lead by example. This stage brings increased responsibility, deeper self-awareness, and a drive for continual improvement—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Training at this level enhances not just strength, flexibility, and cardio, but also character, leadership, and long-term friendships.
Black Belt students also have access to specialized programs, including Black Belt Classes and our Demonstration Team Training. They learn advanced Taekwondo techniques, self-defence applications, and may explore elements from other martial arts.
The Black Belt journey is lifelong. It is about unlocking your full potential—both on and off the mats.
